A short reflection to carry with you
Becoming bigger—in small, quiet moments
There’s something wildly freeing about driving across the Canadian prairies on the way to Banff. That vastness—the endless fields of canola, golden and wind-swept—felt like a kind of quiet expansion. A sea of yellow stretched to the horizon, soft and untamed.
And then, I met the mountains at Lake Louise.
This kind of spaciousness can’t be scheduled or bought. It isn’t found in the thrill of ticking off bucket-lists — it’s discovered in small, unexpected moments: the quiet steadiness of a canoe on rippling water, the pause at the top of a steep trail, the simple beauty of someone crafting a perfect Americano, or the pride in sharing a moment with a loved one.
But summer often comes with a pressure to pack in joy. To do more, see more, offer more. Parents and grandparents race to give their kids a good time. Days get crammed. The nervous system frays.
By the way, you don’t need a road trip to feel expansion.
You can find it in a long exhale. In leaving the to-do list unfinished. Or standing barefoot on grass for just a minute longer than usual.
Meaningful change doesn’t always feel big.
Sometimes it feels like breathing room.
Sometimes it arrives so quietly you almost miss it.
Let safety lead the way
Expansion can feel scary—especially when it brings a shift in perspective. But you don’t have to strive for it.
Instead, allow expansion to come softly. Let it surprise you. Let it be slow. Let it be soft.
Let it arrive in the pause—not the push.
Tiny tip of the week
Let yourself expand without needing to explain.
Rest a little longer.
Wander without a plan.
Let silence count as something.
