The guilt of feeling good

Joy can bring an unexpected companion.

Guilt.

You may notice it when something good happens.

A beautiful day.
A fortunate moment.
A bit of unexpected ease.

Suddenly another thought appears.

Other people are struggling.

Without realizing it, we soften our joy.

We dim it slightly so it feels more acceptable.

Many of us learned early messages about pleasure.

Cultural and religious teachings sometimes framed happiness as something that should be earned.

Or limited.

Guilt often acts as a protective emotion.

It tries to keep us connected to others.

But it can also quietly convince us that joy must always be restrained.
