The journey beneath the emotions
Listening before fear gets loud
Most of the time, fear builds slowly.
It can show up as a slight tightening in your chest, a racing mind, a hesitation before speaking, or the urge to avoid something you know matters. Sometimes it sounds like endless planning or replaying conversations. Other times it quietly convinces you that staying where you are is safer than taking even one small step forward.
By the time we recognize fear, it often feels as though it has already taken over.
But what if we learned to notice it sooner?
Not to judge it.
Not to push it away.
Not to prove that we’re brave.
Simply to notice.
Fear isn’t trying to ruin your life. More often than not, it’s trying to protect something you value. It wants to keep you safe from pain, disappointment, rejection, uncertainty, or loss.
The challenge is that fear doesn’t always know the difference between a genuine threat and the discomfort of growth.
When we don’t notice fear early, it quietly begins making decisions for us. We avoid difficult conversations. We postpone dreams. We stay silent when something needs to be said. We convince ourselves that waiting a little longer is the wise choice, even when we’re really waiting for certainty that may never come.
Listening before fear gets loud gives us another option.
It creates a small space between the feeling and the response.
In that space, we can become curious.
What am I afraid might happen?
What is this fear trying to protect?
Is the danger here today, or is my mind preparing me for something that hasn’t happened?
These questions don’t erase fear.
They simply help us understand it.
Sometimes fear will still ask us to slow down, and that may be exactly what’s needed. Other times, it will be pointing toward something meaningful — a conversation, a change, a boundary, or a new beginning.
Fear isn’t always the voice we should follow.
But it’s often a voice worth listening to.
When we notice it with honesty and compassion, it becomes less of a command and more of a guide. It reminds us to pay attention before we choose our next step.
Perhaps that’s where True North begins.
